Captain’s Reserve wines are produced in extremely limited quantities each
year, exclusively for wine club members and guests of the Estate. They are
named in honor of Captain Gustave Niebaum, the visionary who, in the
1880s, founded Inglenook and brought Napa Valley worldwide recognition.
Made from grapes grown in the finest Napa Valley vineyards—including
Rubicon Estate—these wines are created to illustrate the intensity and
depth of flavors that have made this region famous.
Because most of our Estate wines are designed to mature and develop
complexity with cellaring, it was our goal with Captain’s Reserve to craft
wines that would not need aging and be immediately accessible upon
release. Of course, Sauvignon Blanc doesn’t require maturation anyway,
but we plant so little of this varietal on the Estate that we haven’t been
able to offer this white wine in the past. Because we procure fruit for our
Captain’s Reserve wines from nearby vineyards, we are now able to offer
this noble varietal. Not only does Sauvignon Blanc give us the opportunity
to implement totally different winemaking techniques, it lets us bring
something unique to our portfolio of wines.
The 2007 vintage started with an early bud-break following a very dry
spring. The summer was also mild with the exception of two very warm
weeks in early July. By early August, we were already tasting exciting
flavors in the Sauvignon Blanc grapes from Napa Valley. The flavors
intensified and sugars rose to perfect ripeness by the third week of August
and harvest began.
The 2007 Captain’s Reserve Sauvignon Blanc has an enticing perfume of
fresh citrus and tropical fruit. Rich, mouthwatering flavors of pineapple,
guava and melon mingle with notes of zesty lemon to create a refreshing
yet complex white wine. |
